Breathe Easy Through The Winter

Do you often find it complicated to breathe during the winter time and feel that your lungs need a vaca? How about fighting the cold and flu? There are a couple of natural remedies I have found that could help make life a little easier and help you breathe better and fight the colds and flus that the lovely, dreaded winrer bring.

Alot of folks think that the #1 supplement for fighting the cold and flu is Vitamin C; however did you know that you need to be reaching for Vitamin D? Of course Vitamin C is helpful for boosting immunity; however, Vitamin D has been researched and shows that it boosts the bodies natural defenses and helps fight colds and flus. What’s more is that it even helps fight against respiratory illness as well.  During the winter time there is not a whole lot of sunshine; whereas in other times of the year such as spring and summer there’s plenty of sunshine. Since, the sunshine is hiding its beautiful face the amount of Vitamin D that is in our bodies in minimal and can drop dramatically. Thankfully you can get a natural dose of Vitamin D through many resources.

There are many supplements that you can get ahold of; roughly taking in about 600 IUs a day can help boost the amount of Vitamin D that is in your body. Other sources are plenty of fresh fruits and veggies as well. There are studies that show if your Vitamin D levels are optimal that it can help boost the health of your respiratory and lung health; it can also help prevent viral and bacterial respiratory infections, asthma, and other conditions.

The next amazing natural thing you can do to help keep your respitatory system and lungs healthy during the winter is medicinal mushrooms. Medicinal mushrooms have been in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries and many herbalist and claim they have amazing benefits for the health of humans. Medicinal mushrooms espically have been used for thousands of years to protect against viruses and to help support immunity. Reshi mushrooms espically are recognized to support healthy immune function and some studies have even shown to help prevent lung cancer. Shiitake mushrooms have some of the same benefits for immune function as well as do maitake mushrooms. You can easily find reshi mushrooms in just about any health food store or online. Alot of them come in powder form which is amazing, because you can simply add them into your smoothies everyday for optimal health!

Another thing you can do during cold and flu season is to make some homemade elderberry syrup! You can find my recipe for that here.

CocoBerry Green Smoothie

CocoBerry Green Smoothie:

* 2 handfuls organic spinach

* 1/2 cup organic strawberries {frozen}

* 1/2 cup blackberries {frozen}

* 1/2 cup coconut water {I used Vita Coco, infused with pom & acai}

* 1/2 cup spring water

* 1-2 wheatgrass ice cubes {optional}

Blend everything up!

I used a Nutribullet for this recipe. My Ninja blender is so big and bulky and sometimes I just hate getting it out. Yesterday while shopping on black Friday I was able to snag a Nutribullet for $50! Great deal. I was a little worried that it wouldn’t work as well as “they” say it will. However, it’s a little easier on the bullet if your frozen fruit is slightly thawed, just a little. Also adding almost enough water or liquid to cover what you have in really helps. I put in whole spinach leaves and it shredded them until there was no trace of any solids of the spinach or anything. The seeds from the berries is still there; which is fine of course. The smoothie also came out extremely creamy and very well blended. Honestly it is just about comparable to a Vitamix; almost. But the consistency was perfect for me. If any of you have used a Magic Bullet and didn’t like it; try out a Nutribullet; it’s high power is so amazing and is truely an amazing machine. It’s bigger than the Magic Bullet, but fits perfectly on the counter and isn’t all that bulky. What kind of blender do you use to make amazing superfood powered smoothies? Let me know!

Caldrea & Mrs. Meyers Clean Day

I recieved from Caldrea; a wonderful company who has a full line of luxurious cleaning products for the whole house! Caldrea is also the parent company for Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day! I recieved Caldrea liquid dish soap in Palmarosa Wild Mint and Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day NEW 68 Load laundry detergent in Lemon Verbana! Yum!! I was very impressed with both products and will be using them in the future!

Caldrea, like I said before is the parent company to Mrs. Meyer’s. Caldrea uses essential oils and natural ingedients to have a grime and dirt kicking formula to tackle the toughest messes around your home and more! At Calrea they use nature for natural fragrance and cleaning potency. Every single product they have and use is free of parabens, formaldehyde, ammonia, chlorine, phosphate, petroleum distillate, and phthlatates! That is amazing and wonderful! Scents that are available from Caldrea are: Palmarosa Wild Mint, Mandrain Vetriver, Ginger Pomelo, Lavender Pine, Basil Blue Sage, and Sweet Pea! Yum, sounds like you could eat them! I personally love the Palmarosa Wild Mint; I haven’t used the others but I will very soon!

Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day products are just as amazing! Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Days was inspired by an Iowa Homemaker named; Mrs. Thelma A. Meyer, who is a mother of 9!! Her daughter, Monica, thought that cleaning products should be free of nasty chemicals and should “smell nice, like a garden, but still work like the dickens on daily dirt and grime!” She named the company after her mother, Mrs. Meyer’s. I love that! Again, like Caldrea, Mrs. Meyers uses essential oils and theraputic aromatherapy for cleaning!

A home should smell fresh, clean, and lovely; not nasty, bleachy, and medicinal! It should smell like sunshine! I find that not only with the nasty chemicals and toxins found in traditional cleaners, they are also horrible and nasty smelling and I personally do not want that at all! I’m with Monica, I want my home to, “smell nice, like a garden!”

Caldrea Palmarosa Wild Mint Liquid Dish Soap:
I have never, ever got excited or wanted to wash dishes! Having an older home, I don’t have a dishwasher and with traveling all over the US the hubby for work and living out of 5th wheel, don’t have one there either! However, after using Caldrea and thier liquid dish soap in Palmarosa Wild Mint, it made me want to wash dishes! It smells so heavenly, alluring, and clean! The mint gives a nice scent that is very calming and the Palmarosa is subtly floral, but not too much. All you need is about a squirt or two of the soap to do dishes and it goes a long way. It gave the right amount of natural, clean smell I wanted in the home without smelling un-natural. The Palmarosa Wild Mint soap has soap bark extract, which is natures best degreaser! I didn’t know that until I started to use this product! That is one thing I love about trying out new products; you learn new things! Overall this dish soap gets 5 stars from me across the board, I love it! The size of the bottle is 16 oz for the price of $9.00. The packaging is very clean, sleek, and stylish! I have been using the product for about 2 weeks now and if you look at the picture above I haven’t even got to the top of the beginning of the labeling on the bottle! Which is saying alot because I always feel like I go through dish soap like crazy!! I loved this product and am a customer for life!

Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day 68 Load Lemon Verbana Laundry Detergent:
This is a super concentrated, 4X laundry detergent that smells like a bucket of lemons! Yum! This laundry detergent comes to you concentrated 4X, allowing you to only use 1 TBS per Load!! Now, how often do you feel you are using a full cup or more of laundry detergent? I know I do; well did before I started making my own. Sometimes you just don’t want to make your own, or don’t care to. If not, Mrs. Meyer’s is a wonderful company to use as well. Clean and all natural products and essential oils are used here as well to clean your home and laundry! I was sent this detergent in Lemon Verbana and loved the fresh lemony smell, it’s hard working, but gentle for delicates as well. I always do a “test” with laundry. I wash hubbys dirty work cloths with the detergent, if it gets it clean it’s a winner. Then I do my delicates; if it gets them cleans but keeps the form, shape, and fabric protected and soft it’s a winner as well. Mrs. Meyer’s past both tests!  Stain fighting enzymes, borax, essential oils, and plant derived ingredients are used here to help get your world clean! And does it terrifically! The 68 load detergent comes in a 32oz bottle for $15.99!

All in all, both these products are amazing and will be used in my home for times to come! I highly recommend both of them, at least for you to try once and see if they work for you!

My New Love: One Love Organics

On this wonderful holistic, organic lifestyle change and journey; I am so
excited when I come across another amazing company that is bringing women, and men and children; amazing, organic, and safe skincare, cosmetics, etc. When I came across One Love Organics, I thought; “What a beautiful name”. Sadly, I am one of those people who judges my products on visual first! But, to me I think it’s important it lets me think and know that this company is proud; it’s like walking out of the house dressed and fixed up! Your proud of yourself! Suzanne LeRoux is the wonderful creator of One Love Organics. She is a true believer in natural products, as well as alternative, holistic healing. She has studied holistic nutrition, herbs, and aromatherapy. While she was a lawyer! After 5 years of being a beauty alchemist, One Love Organics was born! She and One Love Organics support Non-profit Organizations that benefit families. Suzanne is an artisian with true heart!

I purchased the One Love Organics Essentials To-Go! I was blown away at how wonderful the products were! I recieved: Skin Savior Waterless Beauty Balm,
Brand New Day: Microderm & Masque, Easy Does It foaming cleanser, Morning Glory Brightening/Complexion Booster, Love Springs Eternal Youth Perservation Serum, and My New Best Friend Shammy! The Essentials To-Go was a great way for
me to try the products before buying the regular size. I got the Morning Glory and Love Eternal Springs in a sample and was very greatful. I am going to be traveling this weekend to Colorado so this could not have came at a better time! All of the product came in an adorable little black and white polkadot costmetic tote. It’s adorable, I love it! Everything fits in it, as well as my basic essentails for makeup! The cost for the Essentials To-Go Pack was $48.00 and was money well spent!

The Skin Savior Beauty Balm: This is the most amazing little “savior”. There is so much you can do with this wonderful balm! It is a moisturizer, makeup remover, performance booster, lip treatment, hair tamer, natural illuminizer, treatment foundation, you can add this to your mineral makeup, I even put a little on my scalp and left on for awhile and then rinsed and rubbed through. *I even used it as a texturizer for hair one day* It has coconut oil *YEA* in it so, therefore it is a natural sunscreen for your face as well. The ingredients in Skin Savior include: coconut oil, sweey soy seed oil, beeswax, mango seed butter, chia seed extract, oat extract, orange peel extract, jojoba seed oil, vanilla extract, natural, non-gmo vitamin E. The price for this lovely little “savior” is $39. This is the multi-tasker you will not be able to live without! I promise you that one!

Brand New Day: Microderm & Masque: Have you ever been to a salon and they are telling you, “Oh, you need a microderm session, several treatments, and it will only cost you $100/treatment! WTF?! Ok, sorry but I am not paying that kind of money for that! How would you like it if I were to tell you, you needed no crazy machine, no breaking the bank, and that you can get your own microderm at home for the amazing low price of $39? Would you take it? I know I would. Well, One Love Organics created this beautiful little Microderm and Masque called, Brand New Day! It has antioxidants, and peptides, and it’s amazing and will have your skin glowing! You can use it every morning, using 1-2 tsp mixed in with some water or double duty with the Easy Does It foaming cleanser and gently scrub your face! Or add some raw honey or plain greek yogurt for a mask for 15 minutes! It’s devine! And smells ever so yummy! Some of the ingredients include: baking soda, rice bran, organic milk powder, silk peptide powder, organic pinapple fruit extract, and allantoin. This is another keeper, it smells heavenly, cleans and exfoliates!

Easy Does It Foaming Cleanser:
Ok, first of all, once again I love, One Love
Organics, not only is the Skin Savior Waterless Beauty Balm a multi-tasker, but the Easy Does It foaming cleanser is as well! You can use this *bad girl* to cleanse your face, body, and wash your hair! Easy Does It is soothing, cleansing, it softens, protects, and is simply amazing! Easy Does It contains glycerin, bark extract, apple extract, apple oil, and honeysuckle extract. It smells heavenly and is so simple and pure! It felt so soft on my skin and was amazing on my hair and entire body. Gentle, safe, and effective for your entire body. There is no need to have a body wash, shampoo, and face cleaner…you can just use Easy Does It! Seriously, it was awesome! My husband thought I was crazy when I told him to wash his hair and body with it. “I thought you washed your face with that?”, me, “I did, but I also used it for my hair and body, you try it!”. And guess what? He loved it! I love using him as a genia pig to try out things as well, it makes sense to make sure everyone in the house will like it! You can pick up Easy Does It for $29.00. However, if you want  a bigger bottle for the shower it is $79 for 32 oz, and this product goes a long way!

Morning Glory Brightening/Complextion Booster:
Ok, I am not trying to sound full of myself here or anything, but everywhere I go alot of people tell me that I have a beautiful complexion, this is on a girl who feels she has to wear makeup and doesn’t feel pretty or that I have pretty skin. My husband and I went to Ulta to pick up a makeup brush I wanted and before we left 3 women told me they would kill for my skin. The hubby said, “See, I told you, you were beautiful.” Aww, I felt pretty for the whole day! With that said, Why wouldn’t I continue to do and use anything and everything that would keep my pretty complexion? Well, I have found it! One Love Organics Morning Glory Brightening/Complextion Booster serum is so amazing! I honestly could see a difference in my skin within one week. Actually all I used on Sunday for makeup was One Love’s Skin Savior, a little bronzer/blush, a little eye liner, and some mascara! My hubbby said that I looked so refreshed and glowing that day, even a friends girlfriend asked me if I was preggers “cause my face was glowing and dewey! OMG, I wish, but I was very thankful for the compliment! I honestly believe this company has the products to be “makeup optional”. Now, Morning Glory, this little baby is packed with a huge punch of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and stimulates, brightens, tightens, and tones your skin. I call it, my little face lift in a bottle! Morning Glory contains; Raspberry Leaf, lemon balm, sweet mint, and essential oils of: lemon, ylang ylang, and peppermint. You can grab “my face lift in a bottle” haha or Morning Glory for $48 I recieved this as a little extra, in a small sample; you can bet I’m buyin this when I run out of my sample!

Love Eternal Springs Youth Perservation Serum: A girls best friend, next to
One Love Organic’s New Best Friend Shammy. Love Springs Eternal Serum is anti-aging, smoothes skin, and wrinkles and reduces them, as well as giving your skin the essential fatty acids it needs. Perserve your youthfullness with this serum, I promise you will love yourself for doing using this product. It felt so delicous on the skin and did what it was suppose to; my skin has felt firmer since using it. I don’t have wrinkles so I am not sure about that; however I don’t want any, so you can bet your bottom dollar I am using it to prevent it!  It is packed with watermelon seed oil, date seed extract, rose oil, neroli oil, frankincense oil, palamarosa oil, and natural vitamin E. You can grab your youth serum for $59.

You can snag 2 of the for $24! Sweetness!

My overall view on One Love Organics was that I am a customer for life! I honestly loved every single product, and was able to try every product. They have everything you need. Natural First Aide Kits for Traveling

First aide kits are found in just about everyone’s home. Some are packed with aspirin, tums, bandades, sugar laden cold and flu syrups and cough drops, and nasty vicks vapor rub and more! What if you could have a more natural first aide kit? Would you use it? Of course you would or else you wouldn’t be here at Naturally Glowing, because you are wanting a more natural, organic approach to not only nutrition but wellness! One of the most annoying things I think is when you are on the road and a headache, stomach ache, tension, anxiety, etc arises and there is nothing to help when you are in the middle of nowhere or you suffer through it because you would rather not buy the aspirin or advil or tums at the fuel station you just passed. Being prepared while traveling is real important. Not only packing healthy foods and water, but health is real important that I think alot of people often most overlook. I remember one time when my siblings and I were younger and we were traveling back to Texas from Colorado with my aunt Lori and mom. In the backseat sat my brother, sister in the middle, and me. For some reason my brother and I were fighting and picking on eachother. Well, my brother had enough and swung at me over my sister; instead of hitting me he whacked her right in the nose!! Blood poured out everywhere! I don’t know how many of you have ever traveled Vail Pass in Colorado on I-70, but regardless if it’s in the winter or summer you don’t want to have to have an emergency were you have to pull over! Well, we did pull over and didn’t really have anything to help her, we had to use clothes to stop her bleeding and couldn’t properly clean her up until we reached another gas station. My mom and aunt were so mad!! It’s kind of funny now looking back, but we sure were in a pinch at the time and if we would have had the proper supplies we probally could have got the mess cleaned up and her feeling better, even on the side of the road! So here are my recommendations for a Natural First Aide Kit while Traveling:
Natural First Aide Kit for Travel:  * Valerian Tincture: sedative properties of valerian make it useful for reliefing anxiety, insomnia, and tension; may also provide minor pain relief. Video to make your own
* Eucalyptus Oil: Potent antibiotic & antiviral, also excellent for treating colds & sinus infections when used in as steam inhalation, but when traveling simply rub a few drops in the inside of nostrils and breath in.
* Witch Hazel Extract: Distilled witch hazel has been reported astringent, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties; which is useful for treating insect bites or skin irritations. Is also a nice base for diluting essential oils; Do not ingest. * Herbal Insect Repellent: A must have! Badger has some great products and can find herbal insect repellant here as well!
* Arnica Gel or cream: Arnica flowers have anti-inflammatory and circulation stimulating properties; the gel or cream can help with sore muscles, sprains, strains, and bruises. Do not apply to broken skin.
* Lemon Essential Oil: Uplifting, clarifying essential oil of lemon can be used as aromatherapy to help get rid of mental fatigue. Also is an antiseptic, but should be diluted before applying to skin.
* Elderberry Extract Syrup or Lozeges: helps with colds and flus; has amazing immune boosting properties. Make your own here.
* Calendula/Comfrey Salve:  Calendula has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties and comfrey’s ability to help heal wounds makes a great salve to have to treat minor scrapes and cuts.
* Goldenseal Capsules or Powder: The antimicrobial properties in Goldenseal is affective against many microorganisms that can cause travelers diarhea. The powder has antiseptic properties that can be sprinkled onto cuts or wounds to stop bleeding. DO NOT use if Pregnant!
* Ginger Capsules, Tea Bags, or Crystalized Ginger or All 3: Ginger has antisposmadic and gas-relieving properties, which will soothe digestive upsets. Also, has been shown to have be a better solution to relief motion sickness and nausea than Dramamine.
* Peppermint Essential Oil and Tea Bags: Peppermint helps soothes stomaches and eases congestions when colds and coughs arise and helps with itching insect bites. You can also rub a few drops on your temples when a headache arises. Do keep in mind peppermint can irritate heartburn.
* Lavender Essential Oil: Multipurpose oil, sedative, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Good for insomnia, anxiety, wounds, burns, and headaches. Mix a couple drops in a small stainless steel water spritz bottle with 4 oz water and spray on wounds and burns or spritz face to relieve headaches and anxiety. It will also deodorize bad smells, i.e. stinky diaper, smelly dog, etc.
* Aloe Vera Gel: Soothing, cooling, and healing has anti-inflammation properties that will heal sunburns or burns from cooking, fire, etc.
* Emergen-C: for electrolite replenishment, when someone gets dehydrated.
* Activated Charcoal: Can be crucial if someone gets food poisoning or ingests poisen of some sort
* Acai Powder: acai has anti-allergenic properities that can be used when an allergic reaction occurs, although not natural Benadryl would be good to have on hand and an epi-pen; just in case!
* Coconut Oil: Keep a small jar in your kit. Coconut oil is anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, antibiotica, antiseptic, and much, much more. Put on burns, insect bites, cuts, bruises, dry skin and more. Can also be ingested 🙂
Other Supplies:
*Twizzers, Scissors * Gauze, bandages, tape, vet wrap (for wrapping sprains or unstable bones) * themometer There are so many other things you can get or supplement for one thing or another. It’s your choice! Do you have anyother items you take or any recommendations? Comment below and let me know! The Ultimate Natural First Aide Kit for Home will be up tomorrow!! Since my husband has to travel for work and usually long distances, we usually try to keep all or most of these items in our trucks. You can store these in a train cosmetic case or a case to carry travel toilitries! Some other items not related to first aide, some are, to keep with you while traveling can be: * water * warm blanket * coat * winter boots * gloves/hat * disposable gloves * flashlight/roap flares * snow chains * canned dog food (if traveling with animals) * protein bars, nuts, canned organic meats, jerky, dried fruit, etc * jumper cables * battery powered car jumper * Small bills of cash and quarters if you need to make a phone call, a few dollars if no ATM is around
What do you keep in your car or truck when traveling for emergencies? Let me know!

Safe & Green Kitchen: Food Storage

The next element in a healthy kitchen is food storage. Everyone needs containers to store leftovers, prep food, and pack up a lunch. What are you storing those foods in? Most likely you are storing them in plastic Glade or Ziplock containers, tupperware, etc. I’ve discussed the harm that plastic can play in our lives and bodies in Part 2 ; I would really like for you to consider giving up those plastics and moving to something a little safer.

Stainless steel containers are an excellent option as they don’t leach chemicals into our food and should be chemical free themselves. Go Green In Stages has a really nice line of stainless steel containers in alot of different sizes. As well as, Life Without Plastic. Go Green in Stages; however, I like a little better for thier afforadability prices. Yes, I know that changing over all of your containers will be time consuming and a little hard on the budget. But it takes times, goes in stages! Hey Christmas is around the corner; when people ask you what you what tell them you would like some containers from Go Green in Stages or Life Without Plastic or a gift card to these places.

Glass containers are a huge recommendation by many; I like them too! However, the concern I have with glass is that it will break. I’ve noticed that the tempered glass containers don’t break, at least I haven’t broken mine yet. Alot of times now you can find glass containers and water bottles with silicone rubber cases around them to help save the container from breaking; which is a huge save! Kinetic Go Green Glasslock containers are awesome! I really like them. They are tempered glass, which makes them sturdier and they have a silicone gasket to seal in the flavor and protect food. They are non-toxic and customers are advised to remove lid before reheating food in the container because of the silicone seal.

When it comes to utensils and flatware I like bamboo, stainless steel, or true real silver. The chances of finding true real silver is pretty slim to none unless you are lucky enough to have a set that has been handed down to you generation after generation. However, it is possible to find some vintage silver from estate sales, etsy, cragislist, or even garage sales, and of course up class ritzy stores. But, for the most of us stainless in the way to go in the metal area. Bamboo is great and sturdy and can actually cut through plenty of foods. I haven’t tried cutting root veggies with bamboo before; but who knows it might work. Try and look for recycled stainless steel when you do buy it; it’s less harsh on the environment!

Safe & Green Kitchen: Utensils

The theme for this week at Naturally Glowing is discussion on making your kitchen a safe, green, and clean place. As talked about in Safe & Green Kitchen: Cookware;  it is so important to not end your healthy journey at the food you eat, but start where you prep, cook, and store your food as well. I have a good response on the cookware article, and now we are moving onto kitchen utensils! There a couple materials we will talk about when it comes to choosing your kitchen utensils: bamboo, stainless steele, plastic, and silicone.

The most dreaded material to have in your kitchen is plastic! I know it’s cheap and sometimes you can’t afford anything but that, or a second cousin by marriage bought a set for you and your hubby and you can’t refuse it….I don’t care, get rid of it, throw it away! It’s not safe, healthy, green, or clean. Plastic contains toxins such as, phthalates and bisphenol; which are known endocrine disruptors that can leach into your food!! And people wonder why there are so many of us with illness such as PCOS, thyroid problems; a little note…if your endocrine system is messed up, your whole body’s hormones are too! Plastic also contains BPA which is a developmental, nueral,and reproductive toxin. Scientists have even linked low doses of BPA to cancers, impaired immune function, early onset puberty, obesity, and diabetes. It can be transferred from the plastic to drinks and food. Plastics that say they are BPA free still contain chemicals that are possibly toxic and might be carcinogenic. This is a a BIG NO, NO is my book and in my kitchen. No plastic here! So, toss yours too!

Next up is silicone. Silicone has become pretty popular lately, espically in the baking world. I hate making muffins, cupcakes, or mini meatloafs in a baking tin without a liner; because, it always sticks! I also hate having to buy cupcake liners everytime I bake something. They are a waste of money and a waste to put more trash in our landfills. Why spend money on something, that isn’t food or necessity, that you are just going to end up throwing away? Anyway, back to food grade silicone. Silicone is made up of silicon, which is a natural element that is found in rock and sand, and oxygen. At this time there seems to be no harm in using silicone. With its’ high heat (500*F) resistance, it doesn’t leach any chemicals into the foods. As per my research I haven’t found any forgein chemicals in silicone products; that is just my research…  However, be aware when buying silicone. Some companies use a filler, which can omit an odor in your food. Before buying silicone twist and move around the silicone, if any white shows through then it contains a filler; which not only leaves the odor in food but may not be as heat resistant as it should be. There is still little research about silicone in cooking, but seems to be ok. It is also comparable in price to plastic; so making the switch shouldn’t hurt your pocket book to much!

Thirdly, we have stainless steel. Now, I have no problem with stainless steel; it’s strong, durable, non porus. It doesn’t react with food, even acidic foods like tomato or vinegar based foods. It is well liked in the kitchen for it’s durability. Is not known to have any toxicity or chemicals present. However, as stated in Part 1: Cookware, stainless steel can sometimes contain copper; and it’s really not good. Copper can leave a metallic taste to your foods and is not desirable in the kitchen. Most cheap stainless steel will carry copper or other unsafe metal compounds in it. Pristine Planet offers some good stainless steel choices, Buy Green has a nice selection as well as Natural Home. Stainless is on my top picks!

Now, for my absolute favorite of them all, BAMBOO!! Did you know that bamboo is a member of the grass family and not the tree family? I didn’t until about 4 months ago; thought that was pretty crazy! Bamboo is also naturally anti-microbial, which means that it will stop the growth of bacteria; which also makes it a great place for the bathroom as well as a kitchen (more on the bathroom later :p ). Bamboo is also one of the strongest, yet lightest materials available; 16% stronger than maple and 33% lighter in weight compared to oak. When bamboo is harvested its natural root system spreads out and starts regenerating another plant; therefore it is also eco friendly in the sense that we are not wasting tons of trees. It only takes up to about 4 years for a bamboo tree (err grass) to reach maturity and ready to be harvested. Obviously, there are no chemicals or toxins used in bamboo products! Which makes them a great essential in the kitchen! One of my favorites is the core grip, over the sink bamboo cutting board from www.corebamboo.com. I love this company! A totally awesome thing about Core Bamboo is that they use 100% Organic grown bamboo. They also use laquer that comes from cashew trees and all of thier products meet USA and European standards. If they meet European standards then they are pretty good because Eurpean countries have awesome, strict regulations! Buy Green also has some great bamboo products!

So, when buying new kitchen utensils and tools use your judgement. First use bamboo, then stainless steel, lastly silicone, and never ever use plastic…please! If you have any recommendations, comments, or concerns leave them in the comment section below!
